What is QuickAddress Pro?

QuickAddress Pro is an address management utility which returns a full and valid address from partial address information that you enter. QuickAddress Pro is commonly referred to as an address capture utility.

QuickAddress Pro uses a separate address database for each country, and you can switch between these databases to retrieve address information from several different countries. You can use two different search techniques to find the address that you want. They are called Typedown and Single Line.

Once you have retrieved an address with Pro, you can write it to a file, or transfer it into a word processor, database, spreadsheet or any other application that is already running on your PC.

How do I install QuickAddress Pro?

Please refer to the QuickStart Guide (Pro V5 only) and the “Installation” section of the product manual. These documents describe in detail how Pro should be installed.

How do I configure/customise QuickAddress Pro?

Please refer to “Configuration” section of your the product manual. This describes in detail how QuickAddress Pro can be configured/customised.

How much disk space do I need to install QuickAddress Pro?

The volume of disk space required for a product installation is dependant on the number of country databases being installed. The QuickAddress application itself is very small (MB).

For information on size of country databases go to the Supported Data Sets section of the relevant QuickAddress Pro Support Zone.

How do I perform better searches with Pro

To search more effectively refer to the Search Tips section of the relevant Country Information Guide.

What are QuickAddress Pro’s hotkeys/shortcut keys?

Hotkeys make all the functions on Pro User Interface (UI) toolbar rapidly accessible. By simply remembering these you will use Pro much more effectively. The hotkeys that Pro uses are:

What platforms (O/Ss) are supported by QuickAddress Pro?

See the Supported Platforms & Implementations section within the QuickAddress Pro Support Zone for more information.

What are the minimum system requirements for running Pro Plug & Go?

Windows 95 and above.

How do I find useful QuickAddress product information?

It’s possible to find out a host of information regarding the product you are using via the System Information Dialog Box. For example, everything from the location of your data files, the version of data files in use, your product version, and the configuration settings can be retrieved.

What is the best way of integrating the Pro API?

Developers should consult the Pro Ideal Implementation document in order to determine the best method of integrating the API. This will save time and ensure developers integrate the QuickAddress API, right first time.

Please go to the QuickAddress Pro Support Zone for more information and to download the document.

How do I find out the product version/location of data files/data vintage I'm using?

If you are using any of the following implementations on any Windows platform this is straight forward:

  • Pro Plug & Go
  • Pro UI (High Level) API
  • Pro Configuration Editor
  • Pro Server/Client

Use the hotkey combination displayed below with your QuickAddress product maximised and in focus (i.e. the main application being used on you desktop).

Hot Key

Function

Retrieve System Information

Within the Product Information window you will be able to locate your release version/location of data files and/or data vintage.

In fact any product where you can reach the QuickAddress User Inteface (UI) you can easily ascertain your product version.

For all other platforms and implementations please use the System Information Dialog Box.

How can I make Pro automatically pop-up within an application field/without a hotkey?

It is possible to automatically pop up Pro Plug & Go with a specific layout if you are using a Windows platform. You can even customise this further if you want so that a specific layouts appear when a certain application is being used e.g. Microsoft Excel.

A QuickAddress utility called QUSHOWN.EXE is used to achieve this. It shipped with the Windows version of QuickAddress Pro Plug & Go.

Full details on using this utility please refer to Appendix A of your QuickAddress Pro Getting Started product manual.

What is Dynamic Configuration?

When Pro uses dynamic configuration, it decides itself which address layout to load. It does this by comparing the title of the underlying application with the names of available layouts under the country database last used.

The application title is the string appearing in the title-bar of the main window. For example, the usual title of MS Word is simply "Microsoft Word". If you have a layout of that name (under the country database last used) and pop up Pro over Word using the dynamic configuration hotkey, Pro will find and load your Word layout.

See the How to popup Pro with a specific layout technical document for more information.

How do I get Pro to pop-up using a specific address layout to an application such as MS Word?

When Pro configures dynamically, it decides itself which address layout to load. It does this by comparing the title of the underlying application with the names of available layouts (under the country database last used).

The asterisk character * used in a layout name has a special function as a wildcard symbol in dynamic configuration. Any number of characters (including none) can be substituted for the wildcard when Pro is searching for a match for the application title.

For example, a layout named:

  • *Microsoft Word

will be loaded by Pro when dynamically configuring Microsoft Word, provided no closer match exists in either case.

To set Dynamic Configuration you need to precede the name of your custom layout (all layouts are created within the Configuration Editor) with an asterisk and the name of the application title, for example * Microsoft Excel.

See the How to popup Pro with a specific layout technical document for more information.

Please Note: When configuring dynamically, Pro tries to find a matching layout for the application title. If it cannot find a match, it tries to load the last layout selected (via the Select Layout menu option or toolbar button), if any, within the current session of Pro. If this can't be found, the standard layout for the current country database will be loaded.

Can I control where QuickAddress Pro is positioned on the screen?

If you move the QuickAddress Pro dialog box during use, it will then in the future pop up in that same position. When you exit the program, this position is saved. When restarted, QuickAddress Pro positions itself according to the last position before it was closed.

Please Note: if several users are using the same networked copy of QuickAddress Pro, upon loading QuickAddress Pro you will inherit the last value saved by any user.

Why choose a client/server implementation?

For distributed installations QuickAddress Client/Server product is recommend, because:

  • Network traffic is reduced
  • It enables live monitoring and control of the server processes via an administration console. The Console acts as a “visible face” of the server, enabling an at-a-glance health check. This can be run on any Windows client machine, including the server.
  • Configuration changes can be performed from a remote client. All address-formatting settings are held server-side, within an INI file. Changes are performed using a remote configuration editor, which runs as a client connected to the server.
  • It is possible to run multiple servers. This is an important feature which allows QuickAddress functionality to be maintained even if one of the servers fail.
  • It enables the clients and the server(s) to run under different operating systems, i.e. Windows/UNIX clients, with Windows / UNIX / AS/400 Servers.
  • Data updates can be performed with no interruption to the service.
  • The number of connected clients can be monitored via the administration console. This enables administrators to adhere to licensing more easily, by setting a maximum number of users who can connect to the server.
  • Administrator Notification Feature: Alerts designated administrators via an email if there is an issue with the application.

Why choose Pro Web?

For server side integrations Pro Web is recommend because:

  • The product comes with SOAP, Java, Perl, ActiveX, and COM interfaces as well as the traditional C interface, therefore it can be integrated into different environments with ease.
  • The statelessness of the product makes it suitable for server side integrations.
  • The product can be installed as either a standalone API or Client/Server. Offering the option to separate the QAS process from the main application server.
