UK 100m Postzon (Gridlink) Grid DataPlus
Description
The UK 100m Grid DataPlus set returns a grid reference for a Postcode with a
resolution of 100m. All grid co-ordinates have a total of 10 digits (5 digit
Easting, 5 digit Northing), with leading zeros where necessary (in very northern
parts there can be a leading 1). The returned grid reference is the closest
to the centroid property in a postcode.
Background
The following 5 organisations have agreed to work together to develop a single
co-ordinated production process to provide a core set of postcode location data
– this new process is called Gridlink®:
- Office for National Statistics (ONS)
- Ordnance Survey (OS)
- Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland (OSNI)
- The General Register Office for Scotland (GROS)
- Royal Mail
This Gridlink® data is used as the basis of postcode
location products. Gridlink® data is available in Postzon, the Royal Mail
product which links postal geography to UK geography. Postzon grid references
are the basis of the 100m Grids DataPlus set. There is a National Consensus
by Ordnance Survey every 10 years, at which time Grid References are checked
and adjusted accordingly
Calculations
The Grid references are calculated as follows:
- The position of all the properties is taken into account and the mean property
position is established.
- The nearest property to this mean position is then counted as the centroid
and a grid reference for that property becomes the reference for the postcode.
Northern Ireland Grid References
The grid references for Northern Ireland (BT) Postcode area reflect the Irish
Grid system, which is different to the National Grid used for England, Scotland
and Wales. The OSEast and OSNorth DataPlus items retrieve Northern Ireland grid
references.
Channel Islands and Isle of Man
There are no 100m grid references for the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
