European Electoral Regions DataPlus

This DataPlus set returns the official name and code of the "European Electoral Region" that a UK postcode falls within.

European Electoral Regions were previously called "European Parliamentary Constituencies" which were based on Westminster constituencies.

Under the current electoral system there are a total of 12 European Electoral Regions:

• SCOTLAND is a single electoral region containing all the unitary authorities in Scotland
• WALES is a single electoral region containing all the unitary authorities in Wales.
• NORTHERN IRELAND is a single electoral region containing all the district councils in Northern Ireland.
• ENGLAND is divided into 9 electoral regions as follows:
  - Eastern
  - East Midlands
  - London
  - North East/West
  - South East/West
  - West Midlands
  - Yorkshire and The Humber

Depending on its size, each region is represented by between 3 and 11 MEP's (Members of European Parliament).

Benefits

Lobbying organisations representing either businesses or the public at a European level need to know the European Electoral Region belonging to their clients.

Organisations that have to report to the MP's for regulatory reasons, such as spending public money, or for political lobbying where an organisation may want to prove an issue based on the results of research within that region. A good example is the National Lottery Charities Board, who are asked by MP's which charities in their constituency have received lottery grants.
