Utility providers aim to compensate customers after data breach
Jan 26 2012, 16:49 PM
Efforts are being made to compensate those who have been affected by a breach of sensitive data held by two utility providers in New York.
More than one million people purchase power from Rochester Gas and Electric and New York State Electric and Gas, the Wall Street Journal reports.
However, a software contractor was recently allowed to access information such as customer birth dates, bank account details and Social Security numbers.
The two organizations have said that while they are unsure how many people had their details accessed, there is no evidence it has been used for malicious purposes.
Nevertheless, they have both opted to give customers free credit monitoring for 12 months in order to appease those who are angry about the data breach and to limit the possible reputational damage.
This comes after Dinah Greek, news editor at Computeractive, urged companies to put data security processes in place to limit how much sensitive data employees are able to access.
