PaaS opportunities to develop as vendor battle intensifies

Firms could make data management savings from the new battle for control of the platform-as-a-service (PaaS) market, according to Gartner.
The research specialists note that cloud technology is coming in three waves - infrastructure-as-a-service and software-as-a-service are already highly developed markets, but PaaS is lagging behind.
However, Gartner believes that vendors will now be intensifying their battle for control of this particular market sector, which is likely to lead to good opportunities for firms looking for low-cost deals.
The key issue for firms considering PaaS will be the ability of the provider to provide optimized integration, according to Yefim Natis, vice-president and distinguished analyst at Gartner.
"Mainstream users of PaaS services will likely look for providers that deliver comprehensive and integrated PaaS functionality suites – forcing the specialist offerings to consolidate," he added.
Rhianna Collier, vice-president for the software division at the Software and Information Industry Association, says that there are many financial benefits for using PaaS operations such as managed server hosting.
