Summary

This document describes how to create a central data store for QAS product data files. This configuration is known as creating a data file server. Using a central data store is advantageous as it avoids duplication of data and makes performing a data update much easier.

A single data store can host files used by different platforms (it is possible to host files on UNIX that will be used by Windows products and vice versa) as long as the directory the data files are stored in is accessible to all client computers.

This document does not assume that any QAS Server software, or any other product, has been installed on the computer that hosts the QAS data files required.

Solution

1. Select a computer (preferably a server with good network bandwidth) to host the QAS data files.

2. Install the most recent version of the data files onto the chosen computer in an (internally) accessible location. Your data updates letter will tell you which products use which files and on which CD they’re located. Share this data folder to all necessary clients on your network.

3. Install all QAS clients without installing any data. Select the appropriate options when installing QAS products via the installers to achieve this.

4. Change the QAS configuration file on all the clients so that their data directory reference points to the shared location. This location can either be in UNC (Uniform Naming Convention) format (e.g. \\server\qaddress\pafdata) or as a mapped drive (e.g. m:\qaddress\pafdata) which will be a mapping from a drive letter to a UNC location.

The table below lists the relevant configuration file for common QAS products:

Product

Configuration File

Pro UK V2 / Rapid UK V2

QADDRESS.INI

Rapid UK V3

QARAPID.INI

Pro UK V3

QAPRO.INI

Pro Web UK

QANSRV.INI

Pro WV V3

Pro World (V4 and later)

Batch World (V4 and later)

QAWSERVE.INI

Consult your manual to identify the configuration file for your QAS product.

5. To test that the client computers work using the central data store, load the corresponding QAS product on a client computer. You may need to licence your QAS data. Your manual will show you how to do this.

Performing data updates on a central file server

QAS UK product line users: You can use the Windows QAS data installer, or manually update your data files.

QAS World product line users: You must manually copy the data files to the relevant storage folder.
