USPS valid address - QAS Online Glossary

Definition:
A USPS valid address is an address that abides by United States Postal Service standards and formatting.

When addressing mail within the United States, it is important to adhere to the USPS valid address format. While many believe that they know the appropriate way to address an envelope or package, a USPS valid address has features that are not commonly followed by the majority of mail senders.

A USPS valid address contains the following:

  • All capital letters
  • A valid and deliverable address
  • Included company name, apartment number, or suite number if applicable
  • Valid USPS acronyms and abbreviations
  • A valid ZIP+4 code
  • No commas or periods

The example below shows a USPS valid address:

JOHN SMITH
COMPANY INC
123 N MAIN ST STE 45
BOSTON MA 02110-1615

Ensuring that an address is a USPS valid address is an important step in reducing amounts of returned mail and improving mail delivery time.
